The Estranged return with their 3rd (4th, if you count the Singles Comp LP) album for Dirtnap!

The Estranged formed in Portland, OR back in the summer of ‘06 by Mark Herman (vocals, guitar), Derek Willman (bass) and Keith Testerman (drums). All 3 were in legendary Portland band Remains Of The Day, and various members are/were in notable Portland bands such as From Ashes Rise, Hellshock, Lebenden Toten, plus literally more than I can remember at the moment.

After playing a handful of shows that summer/fall in their home of the Pacific Northwest, they recorded their first batch of songs at the Type Foundry Studios in Portland, which resulted in 3  singles, along with a split 7” with Autistic Youth and a compilation track for a 7” in 2007. The session would later be issued on full length as the "Type Foundry Session 1” release.

Following this session they would release their debut LP, the Greg Sage influenced "Static Thoughts" in 2008 on Dirtnap records in the U.S. and Sabotage in Europe. This release was supported with a handful of tours, including a full U.S. tour with friends, The Red Dons and a West Coast tour with Spectres from Vancouver, B.C., among others.

Following these tours they would embark in a darker direction than the previous releases with their 2010 release titled "The Subliminal Man" (inspired by a story by J.G. Ballard). The songs took on a deeper and more complex sound, incorporating more synths and experimental textures and sounds. In the summer of 2011 they made a 5 week tour of Europe in support of "The Subliminal Man".

After their return from Europe they would begin writing/demoing more songs this time taking more time than in the past to dial in a more specific sound. The songs written during this 3 year period will be appearing on their new Self-Titled album to be released in March 2014 by Dirtnap Records and Sabotage Records.

Continuing in The Estranged’s tradition of mutating and evolving with each subsequent release, the new album is an epic, sprawling masterpiece of tense, ominous angst-ridden postpunk.

They’ve heavily toned down both the Wipers influence of the 1st album and the blatant death-rock vibe of the 2nd. Instead,  this one finds the band establishing a streamlined, punchier sound that both rocks a little harder than the last album, while retaining some of the textured soundscape feel which fans of that record have come to expect.

The influences on their newest album range from the Cure to Echo & the Bunnymen to The Troggs. Lyrically, they have more of an ambiguous angst ridden approach, musically showing the bands continued maturity in their song writing and recording process.

The first pressing of 1000 LPs are packaged in ultra-heavy "tip-on” style jacket and inner sleeves. Subsequent pressings will come in regular jacket/sleeves. All copies come with download coupon.
