What is your name, and what is your job title at Angry, Young and Poor?
Andrea Anderson – Merch Maven, Co-Owner & buyer for the shop. We have 3 on deck owners. My husband Jeff deals with the music and music related merch & getting merch on the website, I do accessories and fashion & the retail shop, and John runs the mail order end of things.
Tell us more about Angry, Young and Poor! When did you open and what’s changed since then?
ANGRY, YOUNG AND POOR began as an independent punk store on North Prince Street in Lancaster PA in 1995..We’ve all known each other since pre-kindergarten and have been into punk rock since the early 80s when older brothers, neighborhood punks, college radio DJs and local punk shop owners turned us onto what good music sounded like. We were tired of driving a couple of hours to Philly, Baltimore, NYC or DC every time we wanted to buy music and clothing so we opened our own shop and created a one stop punk shop for music and clothing and a local place for kids to hang out. We immediately had a mail order (stapled together/low end) catalog that looked more like a zine. We could never keep it up to date or find anyone around here in Amish Country to print because all the printers objected to the content. We also had a very basic website the minute the internet took off.
What did you do before Angry, Young and Poor?
I was a Certified Recreational Director in long term care – I was the head Bingo queen
What’s the best part about your job?
I love still seeing kids get excited about punk & metal music, buying their first vinyl record, discovering a band, having a huge international family in the scene because of the shop and our fantastic customers worldwide, providing other DIY companies with a place to sell their merch, and giving others a place to find items they may never be exposed to otherwise because of where they live
What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?
Pho or Ramen & a Springroll with peanut sauce, & Vietnamese Coffee
What is the most important appliance in your home?
Coffee maker.
Do you have any irrational fears?
Getting lost – I HATE GETTING LOST
Do you like Sci-Fi movies? How about TV?
Too tired to watch an entire movie after working 20 years – lol
-If yes-What’s your favorite? Currently the Gotham TV Show
-If no-What would you rather watch? Horror Movies or Horror TV – Love the new Ash vs Evil Dead TV Show – it is fantastic!!
Have you ever ridden a camel?
Yes at the Philadelphia Zoo – clap clap!
What are you most excited about in the coming months?
We are stoked to have made it 20 years and to still have customers driving 8 hours to shop here, make vacation detours to shop here, international trips to shop here, and still have the ability to do what we love.
